Welcoming Baby: Including Big Brothers & Sisters in Your Newborn Photoshoot

Your family is growing, and it's such an exciting, whirlwind time! While the tiny fingers and toes of your newborn are captivating, capturing those first precious moments between your baby and their older sibling(s) creates truly heartwarming memories that tell the whole story of your expanding family.

Capturing Connection

There's a unique magic in photos featuring newborns and their siblings. We adore capturing:

  • The gentle curiosity in a toddler's eyes.
  • A protective older sibling's careful cuddle (always posed safely!).
  • Tiny hands compared.
  • The simple, beautiful presence of your children together, right from the start.

These images document the beginning of a lifelong bond and often become the most treasured portraits as your children grow.

Making it Easy & Safe (Even with Reluctant Siblings!) in Our Dublin Studio

We know you might wonder how your toddler or young child will do during the session, especially with all the new changes at home. Let's be honest, sometimes toddlers or younger children aren't immediately thrilled about posing closely with their new sibling! Nerves, a touch of jealousy, or just feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all are completely normal reactions we see often.

Rest assured, we've encountered it all here in our studio and have plenty of patient tricks up our sleeve! We work gently, sometimes using a little strategic encouragement (like having Mum or Dad positioned just out of frame near the baby) to help guide their gaze naturally. A favourite small toy or sticker can work wonders too! Our goal is to capture genuine connection, however brief the moment might be.

And if a sibling really isn't comfortable getting close on the day? No problem at all – we never force interactions. In these cases, we can often photograph the older sibling separately – perhaps looking curiously into an empty, cosy prop like a basket or bed. (or watching Bluey on Mammy or Daddy's phone in the basket!) Then, we safely photograph your newborn in the same prop afterwards. With a little post-session editing magic, we can frequently create a beautiful composite image that shows them 'together,' capturing that sibling relationship peacefully and artfully, without any stress during the session.

No matter the approach needed, we always prioritise:

  • Safety First: Whether posed together carefully or captured for a composite, your newborn's safety and comfort are paramount.
  • Low Pressure, High Fun: We keep the atmosphere light and quick for little ones, aiming for genuine moments, not forced smiles.
  • Timing is Key: Depending on your child's personality we either schedule sibling and family photos towards the beginning of the session when older children are typically most refreshed and cooperative OR at the end for more shy kids, to allow them time to get to know us and become more comfortable.
  • Comfortable Setting: Our cosy Dublin studio provides a calm, controlled environment designed to make the process smoother for everyone.

Including older siblings adds a beautiful, irreplaceable layer of love and connection to your newborn gallery. These photos aren't just about a new baby; they're about your family, complete.
